Someone Who I Use To Know

As always, her Priors had been sent out to preach Origin to the unbelievers of Cartago, and preach they did. They always seemed to attract large gatherings and Adria had heard that there was much muttering amongst the population, though it was left to be seen which direction they would turn.

Adria had been curious, curious to see for herself what the people said among themselves. Curious to see how they truly felt about the Priors and the new religion they were trying to spread and so she had dressed herself as one of the Cartagians and had gone down to the planet so she could freely walk through the cities once her Priors had left to leave the people to ponder what they would do. It was an interesting mix of feelings she encountered. Fear of the new and acceptance. Some wanted to fight these newcomers and others wanted to embrace them. The Priors were compared to the Goa'uld and still others scoffed. It was a strange mixture to her and she was surprised that some did not seem to care either way.

Her eyebrows furrowed as she reached up, tugging the shawl that was covering her head back in to place as she walked down the street, pondering the things she had learned. She turned a corner and though she had been expecting their presence on the planet, she truly did not expect to actually see SG-1. She was about to duck her head, and turn down a different street when she saw him. Jonas Quinn. Him she had not expected to see and her eyes widened. She was staring, she knew she was and her heart was pounding almost painfully in her chest. She did duck her head though but she was certain he had looked in her direction right as she had done it.

She quickly turned down the street, pushing through the small crowd of people, intent on losing herself in that crowd just in case he had seen her.

When Jonas had been rescued from the Ori, he hadn't exactly been expecting the SGC to let him do much in the way of helping. He thought he would be left to find his own way to help, just as he had the last time before he'd managed to get Colonel, now General, O'Neill to let him on SG-1. So he'd been more the pleasently surprised when a man he'd never met had insisted that he rejoin SG-1 as soon as possible. Cameron Mitchell had been so insistent that Jonas had been unable to refuse, so SG-1 became the first six person team at the SGC.

But it worked out nicely. It seemed like the extra members were needed just to make a team of four when Sam was sucked into working on a new weapon in the labs or Teal'C was working with the Free Jaffa Nation or Daniel was buried in another ancient text that might have a lead towards another defense against the Ori. For today's mission, it was Colonel Mitchell, Vala, Daniel and Jonas, which was a good thing since Teal'C and Sam were the two who have noticed Jonas' sudden distraction.

SG-1 had gone into hiding when the Priors had arrived and had come out to talk to the population again once they had gone. Jonas was with Cam, speaking to some of the Cartagians' leaders, when he spotted a very familiar face amoung the crowd that caused his breath to catch and his heart to race. It was only his Langaran senses that let him keep track of Cam's conversation as he tracked her through the crowd. He debated with himself for a few moments on whether or not to go after her, to see if it was who he thought it was, when Cam decided for him. The Colonel started arguing with one of the leaders and gave Jonas the perfect opportunity to slip away.

It had taken some doing but Jonas had managed to follow her through the crowd. She didn't make it easy but it helped that people saw his uniform, sensed he was on a mission and moved aside. He just hoped that they didn't report which direction he was going to another member of his team if they asked. While it occurred to him that this could be a trap, he preferred that he wasn't found by SG-1 anytime soon. Not until he figured out if the woman was who he thought she was.

Adria, the Orici herself. Just the thought caused a lump in her throat. What could she be doing here, blending in like that? Could it...could it possible be because SG-1 was here? He didn't think so highly of himself to think she was here because of him...but he'd be lying if a small part of him did hope.

Jonas followed her out to the outskirts of town and stopped when she did. When Adria, because there was no doubt now, just looked at him, he could only look at her in amazement. "What are you doing here?" He asked, more like he was speaking his thoughts out loud then actually asking.

This wasn't exactly the right setting for personal and intimate, especially since Jonas wasn't sure it would be welcome either. What did you say to someone who held you captive in exchange for your planet's freedom? Even if it hadn't exactly felt like captivity towards the end, even he would admit. Still, he hadn't exactly shared that part with the SGC.

Her question made him frown before he shook his head. "What? Oh. No. I didn't follow you for that." Jonas didn't comment about he no doubt should alert the other but he wouldn't do that to her. Though he did take a step closer, looking around to be sure he wasn't followed. Though with his luck, Vala and Daniel would no doubt pop out somewhere when he least expected it.

"I..." He realized that saying he was worried about her being out alone, once he realized who she was, was ridiculous. She could take care of herself and he didn't think saying it out loud would be a good thing. So he changed mid breath to his next question, "Why do you care what the people are like? I thought you only cared about whether they converted to Origin or not."

"Because I wanted to know if it was you!" Jonas blurted out. It was the truth, even if a simplified version, though he wasn't sure he could verbalize his motivations. He wasn't sure of them himself and yet it didn't even occur to him that she could have stolen them from his mind. Adria had never done that to him and he didn't think she would now. He just knew that.

Jonas looked around again and spotted a more secluded spot, the entry to an allyway that was out of the way. He gently touched her elbow, not wanting to test how welcome his touch might be or to have her lash out, and nodded to the spot before moving in that direction.

It wasn't so much that he thought the worst, Jonas just didn't think he'd changed her way of thinking that much to warrant her wandering around alone amid the people she was trying to convert. He'd hoped sure, but to actually see it was a genuine surprise. Her response was defensive and Jonas didn't blame her, even if he did wince slightly. "I'd hoped..." He shook his head. Defensive or not, her reasons made more sense then him having changed her way of thinking.

"It's certainly a different approach then you've used before. I can't help but wonder if it's because you knew we were here." The thought that this was a clever trap sprang to mind again. Funny how the idea of being captured again didn't phase him as much as it should. He'd missed her, if he was being honest.

Why would he care. That's what Adria stopped herself from saying and Jonas couldn't help looking at her with wide eyes. Had it really mattered to her if he would care? What he would feel upon seeing her again? And Jonas found that he didn't have an answer. He knew how he should care as a member of SG-1...but he was finding the truth to be more sympathetic.

Jonas was glad she followed him, both to get out of the open and because he hoped it meant she trusted him a little. Trusted him not to call the alarm or otherwise expose her. He should...but he couldn't bring himself to. Because he too wanted a few more moments in her presence.

To be fair, while Adria had listened to him more patiently then any other, she had never given him an indication that she'd changed her ways of thinking so how was he to know? She'd kept up her end of the argument when they spoke so he had no reason to believe otherwise. But he had fantastically hoped, in the time since his return to the SGC, that she might consider what he'd said.

"Why?" Jonas asked, surprised yet again. This Orici was acting differently then usual, differently then even the one he'd spent so much time with as her captive. It was a bit unnerving and he wasn't sure how to react. "You have made it no secret that you want SG-1 out of your way. If you've been leaving us alone, that's a big change, especially with us on the same planet."

Then it hit him. "Not us. Me. You've been leaving me alone." But then he had to shake his head. "I still don't understand," he said softly.

Jonas had to admit, he'd wondered at the Orici's sudden lack of interest in SG-1. It definitely was a drastic change for her. But he couldn't follow the line of thinking that led to her caring about him. A small part of him had hoped but could he really allow himself that? As a Langaran used to war, he knew nothing good could come of caring for the enemy.

Except it was just getting too hard to think of Adria as the enemy anymore and caring for the enemy had always been his weakness. Maybe he'd be better off staying in the mountain or going out to Atlantis, away from even the thought. It had to be pretty hard to care about the Wraith, right?

"I didn't presume. You said it yourself." While he wouldn't doubt that Vala played some part in this, the first thing Adria had said was that she was leaving him, Jonas, in peace. The implication had been clear enough and Jonas wanted to know why. It took everything he had not to reach out and grab her arm, to keep her there until he got an honest answer. Or at least make the attempt considering her powers.

But as if on cue, Jonas' radio crackled to life and Daniel's voice came through, "Jonas? Did Cam lose you or did you wander off?"

He opened his mouth reply that it did matter, it mattered a lot...but she was right. Jonas should have told Cam the moment he spotted her. He should have radioed the others to tell him where he was going, instead of blindly following her through strange streets, just in case it had been a trap. But it hadn't even occurred to him.

Jonas had reached out towards her, not wanting her to go, and had even opened his mouth to tell her to wait. He hadn't even thought about answering his radio. And he was pleasantly surprised when Adria was suddenly in his arms, kissing him.

The part of him that had been holding back broke and his arms wrapped around her waist, trapping her against him for the moment. If this was the only moment they would get, he wanted it to count just as much as she did, despite the danger of being caught by his teammates.

Daniel, and now Cam, where yelling at him through his radio but Jonas didn't care. He was wrapped up in how perfect she felt in his arms. How she fit just right. How he'd missed this.

When she pulled back, Jonas cocked his head slightly, a bright smile on his lips as took in her eyes, her face, her hair...memorizing every little detail to recall later. As she kissed him again, he leaned down into, pushing her gently so her back against the alley wall, hiding them a bit more in shadow. He knew better then to attempt to get his hands into her gown, so he instead moved his head to kiss along her jaw and down her neck. His hands didn't move from holding her against him at the waist, even as he shivered under the touch of her hands on his skin.

At first he didn't hear her, lost in the feeling of her so close. The taste of her skin was like water after a drought and he couldn't get enough. The sounds she made were music to his ears and he didn't want to let her go.

But his mind was faster then his feelings and he pulled back with a sigh. Adria was right, SG-1 were probably already searching the village for him. He took a deep breath to calm his feeling before pulling back so he could reach up to his radio.

"This is Jonas. Sorry for wandering off, Cam, I saw a villager I'd talked to before the Priors arrived and went after them. I'm almost done here and I'll meet you guys in the square in 20 minutes, alright?" It didn't give them much time but he knew if he didn't give them a time, they'd come looking anyway. They didn't say it to his face, but his teammates tended to be over protective of him when they were on planet with a known Ori presence. When Cam gave him an affirmative, and said he'd be in big trouble if he was even a second late, Jonas gave a sigh of relief.

He dropped his hand back to her waist and took the opportunity to just look at her, a fond expression in his eyes as his hand raised again to draw some hair behind her ear. "We don't have much time."

It was the beauty of being Jonas. He was so painfully honest usually that people tended to forget he was a trained diplomat and used to be a government official for a government at war. A position he could not have managed without being able to tell a lie with a straight face on occasion. He didn't like to lie but he was pragmatic enough to know when it was necessary.

Or in this case, selfish enough.

"I'm glad because so have I." The hand stayed to cup her cheek, the thumb caressing it softly. His lip trembled slightly at the touch before he pressed a kiss to her fingers. "I knew I shouldn't but I couldn't help myself."

It was a good thing Adria had ducked her head so she didn't see the dawning realization in Jonas' eyes. She wished he didn't have to go. The most powerful woman in the universe cared enough about what he wanted that she was willing to let him go, when it would have been nothing for her to capture or coerce him into staying with her again.

He knew he should be trying to find some tactical advantage to this...but instead his heart just swelled and the corners of his grew wet.

Jonas swallowed thickly and hugged her tightly, like the most precious thing in the universe, while he found his voice. "Me too. I wish we could just disappear for while. Away from everything." From the Ori and the SGC. From where they had to fill the roles of Orici and SG1. To where they could just be Adria and Jonas. It just wasn't fair.

Jonas blinked at her as she spoke what he was thinking. It wasn't like Jonas hadn't turned his back on the planets he considered home before. Sure, they had both been for the greater good, Kelowna to make up for Daniel's death and then Earth to broker a peace for Langara. Could he do it for a selfish reason now? Could he do it for love now?

"Do you think they would let us go?" He asked, breathlessly, as if he couldn't believe they were actually considering this. But he believed her sincerity just from the fact she suggested it. He knew how hard even considering it must be for her. "The Ori are powerful, the SGC is stubborn and both are pretty far reaching at this point."

His hands immediately came up to cup her face and Jonas placed a sweet kiss on her lips. "I want. Trust me, I want." It was like making the decision to leave Kelowna all over again, in an instant he just knew. Knew that he couldn't imagine a better future then somewhere they could be free, together.

Then he had an idea. "No. I think you need to kidnap me again." He grinned slightly as he thought about it. "In front of SG-1. Then, when we are back with your Priors, we'll put on the opposite ruse. If they suspect each other of having us, then they won't know to look for us elsewhere." If they were going to take the risk, what was a little more to give them the best chance possible? It wasn't like the two groups weren't at war anyway.
